What you are buying
- The work spans planning, creative, media and reporting under one contract, usually on a monthly retainer with a named account team.
- Breadth is bought at a cost: the specialist depth in any single channel is normally below that of a shop doing only that channel.
- The value shows in coordination. If your channels currently contradict each other, this is the category that fixes it.
How it is priced
- 62%Monthly retainerThe default. Fixed fee, agreed scope, named team.
- 26%Project feeCampaign or launch with a defined start and end.
- 12%Performance componentA share tied to agreed results, usually capped.
Rough share of engagements in this category. A retainer with a small performance component is the most common shape and the hardest to compare between bidders.
Running the selection
Give every shortlisted agency the same written brief, the same data, and the same access to your team. Anything one of them learns in a side conversation makes the proposals incomparable.
Pay for the pitch if you are asking for real thinking. Unpaid pitches select for agencies with spare capacity, which is not the trait you want.
Ask to meet the people who will do the work, not only the people selling it. Then ask what else those people are on.
Put these in the contract
| Named senior time | Days per month, by person, written into the contract rather than described in a meeting. |
| Reporting cadence | What arrives, how often, and which decisions it is meant to inform. |
| Change process | What happens when priorities move mid-quarter, and whether that costs extra. |
| Data ownership | Accounts, pixels, audiences and creative files in your name from the start. |
| Exit terms | Notice period and what you receive on the last day. |
Ask before you sign
- How is this retainer staffed, in days per person per month?
- Which part of our current plan would you stop doing?
- Who owns the ad accounts and the creative files?
- What does a bad quarter look like, and what would you change?
- What is the notice period, and what happens to work in progress?
